Recycle IT - Community Electrical Recycling
About this idea
Recycle IT is a community based social enterprise specialising in recycling Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). It is the only Community Electronic Recycling Social Enterprise in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow providing a neighbourhood, community and business collection service for all types of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
Clondalkin Community Recycling Initiative was originally set up in 2002 by the Environment Working Group of Clondalkin Partnership under the Irish Governments Social Economy Initiative. With support from South Dublin County Council (SDCC) and Clondalkin Partnership the initiative developmed into a Social Enterprise, now offering employment and training opportunities to over 20 people. Over the years, the initiative established a presence in Dublin and surrounding areas and became known as Recycle IT. Today the teams work with households, community organisations and small business to facilitate electronic, electrical and pure metal recycling and promote environment awareness.
Results
Recycle IT spread awareness on the importance of recycling electrical items and equipment. The organisation offers personal and business collections as well as free collections in cooperation with charities, schools, resident’s associations and community groups.
Recycle IT supports communities in disposal of out-of-use electronic devices. The organisation will take any electrical items with a plug or a battery. This includes dual purpose business and household appliances like computers, printers, washing machines, dishwashers or fridges. They also take small battery-operated devices like electric toothbrushes, mobile phones and pocket radios.
